Under EASA Part-145.A.30, your competency is strictly regulated. Being an inspector isn’t just about reading a packing slip. EASA regulations demand that you have a thorough understanding of the receiving system, the regulatory requirements, and the components you handle. Acceptable Means of Compliance to 145.A.30 explicitly state that receiving inspection personnel must have documented training covering part identification, regulatory requirements, handling, and storage. Your competency must be formally assessed before you are authorized to release parts independently. You act as a critical safety net, preventing unairworthy parts from ever entering the supply chain.
Why are these rules so strict? Why do we obsess over paperwork? Because we study regulations that were written from hard lessons. In September 1989, Partnair Flight 394, a Convair 580, crashed into the sea off the coast of Denmark, resulting in the tragic loss of all 55 people on board. The investigation revealed a terrifying root cause. The aircraft’s vertical stabilizer, or the tail section, was held on by four heavy-duty bolts. Three of those bolts were counterfeit bogus parts. These unapproved parts looked identical to the real thing, but they had only about 60 percent of the required metallurgical strength.
Over time, normal flight vibrations caused severe resonance in the tail. The substandard bolts simply could not handle the stress. They snapped, the tail broke off, and the aircraft was lost. Those bolts lacked proper documentation and back-to-birth traceability. They were purchased from a broker who could not verify their origin. An incoming inspection that rigorously checks documentation and traces the origin of a part is the only way to stop a counterfeit part from destroying an aircraft. Your signature is a guarantee of safety.
