Welcome to Waypoint A.7: LRU Replacement General Practices. LRUs (Line Replaceable Units) are the brains of the aircraft, but they rely on the EWIS to function. Changing a box is not just “plug and play.”
First, check the retention devices. Whether it’s hold-down hooks, thumb nuts, or cam-locks, ensure they are in good condition. A loose box vibrates, and vibration destroys connector pins (fretting corrosion).
For Certification Considerations, specifically CAT 2/CAT 3 Landing capability, the racking and bonding are strictly controlled. If you replace an autopilot computer or a radio altimeter, you must verify the bonding resistance of the rack. If the bond is poor, the signal integrity degrades, and the aircraft may lose its Low Visibility landing certification.
LRU Re-racking procedures: When you slide a unit into a rack, do not force it. If you feel resistance, stop. You might be bending a pin on the rear connector. This is a common cause of “bent pin” damage. Gently rock it to seat the connectors, then engage the hold-downs. Once seated, do not use the hold-down screws to pull the box in; the box should be fully seated by hand first.
We touched on No Fault Found (NFF) earlier. If you are replacing a unit because of a fault code, and the replacement unit shows the same fault, stop swapping boxes. The problem is in the rack or the wiring. Check the pins on the rack side. Are they recessed? Are they bent?
Finally, Built-In Test Equipment (BITE). After replacing any LRU, you must run the BITE check. This confirms not only that the box is working, but that the EWIS interfaces (inputs and outputs) are connected correctly. A pass on the BITE is your confirmation that the EWIS–LRU interface is healthy.
Handle with care, secure it tight, and verify the bond. That completes Lesson A.
