Welcome to Waypoint A1. Before we touch a single wire or connector, we need to talk about the most critical component in the aviation system: You.
We are starting with Safety Practices. This isn’t just about compliance; it’s about making sure you go home to your family tonight and that the aircraft is safe for the passengers tomorrow. According to AMC 20-22, Appendix C, we must cover five key areas: the lethality of current, applying power, circuit isolation, aircraft warnings, and human factors.
First, let’s be clear: Current is lethal. In the hangar, we get comfortable around 115 Volts AC and 28 Volts DC. But it takes very little current to stop a heart. Never assume a wire is dead. Treat every bundle as if it’s live until you have personally verified it. This mindset is your first line of defense.
Next, let’s discuss applying power to the aircraft. This is a high-risk event. Before external power is connected or the APU is started, you must ensure the area is clear and all systems are safe. You must communicate. Use standard phraseology. If you are the one applying power, it is your responsibility to ensure no colleagues are working on live circuits. A simple shout of “Clear!” isn’t enough; visual verification is required.
This brings us to isolating the circuit. When you are working on EWIS, pulling the Circuit Breaker (CB) is standard practice, but it is not the only practice. You must tag it. A “DO NOT OPERATE” tag isn’t just paperwork; it’s a physical barrier between your life and a high-voltage shock. In a Part-145 environment, we often use lockout/tagout procedures. Never reset a CB that has been tagged by someone else. If you didn’t tag it, don’t touch it.
We also need to heed aeroplane warnings. Modern aircraft are incredibly smart. They will tell you if a system is energized or if a flight control surface is about to move. Pay attention to the ECAM, EICAS, or onboard maintenance terminal. These warnings are there to protect the EWIS from collateral damage as much as they are to protect you. Ignoring a “System Powered” warning can lead to arcing, which damages the wiring insulation—damage you might not see, but which will fail at 30,000 feet.
Finally, we must address Human Factors. Fatigue, complacency, and pressure are the enemies of EWIS integrity. When you are tired, you might skip the detailed visual inspection of a backshell. When you are rushing, you might force a connector that is keyed differently. AMC 20-22 emphasizes this because EWIS damage is often cumulative. One small nick in the insulation today, combined with vibration and moisture over six months, leads to a hard short later. If you are fatigued, STOP. If you are unsure, ASK. That is the mark of a professional.
