A Regulation Review for Drone Operations

A regulation review of EASA drone operations for all players in the system.

What the Course is About

The European Commission, through the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), has developed and published Commission Regulations (EU) 2019/947 and 2019/945 to set the framework for the safe operation of drones in European skies.

At DOGTOOTH, we have recognised that all stakeholders and businesses, especially those with personnel not familiar with the aerospace industry, may need help in understanding the basic principles surrounding drone operations regulation. This course is also suitable for hobbyists looking to develop a better understanding of how this regulation applies to them.

Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/947, covering the operation of unmanned aircraft, has become effective on the 31st of December 2020. It accounts for most types of operations, leisure or commercial, and defines three categories in accordance with an increasing level of risk, namely:

  • Open (lower risk)
  • Specific (medium risk)
  • Certified (higher risk)

This course will outline the principle elements surrounding the safe operation of Unmanned Air Systems in the Open Category. Specifically, we will take a look at the sub-categories defined in this category, the regulatory boundaries allowing the use of drones within the Open Category, as well as the responsibilites of the UAS Operator and the remote pilot.

This course will also outline the basic principles of the Specific Category, including the use of Standard Scenarios, Pre-Defined Risk Assessments and Risk Assessments.

We will conclude the course by explaining the Certified Category and introducing the learner to Urban Air Mobility.
