What the Course is About

This course serves as an introduction/recurrent learning experience for personnel within the IATA Dangerous Goods Training categories listed under “Target Audience” below.

Several goods which are transported on aircraft today may pose a higher safety risk than normal.  Collectively, these goods are known as dangerous goods. Dangerous goods are defined by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), as articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment (and which are shown in the list of dangerous goods in the Technical Instructions or which are classified according to those Instructions).

The course takes full advantage of RAVEN’s immersive and interactive features.

Target Audience

This course is intended for:

  • Operators and Ground handling accepting cargo  or mail other than Dangerous Goods (IATA Cat 13)
  • Operators and Ground Handling agent staff  involved in storage and  loading of cargo, mail and baggage. (IATA Cat 14)
  • Passenger Handling staff (IATA Cat 15)
  • Flight Crew members, loadmasters, load planners and flight operations officers, flight dispatchers (IATA Cat 16)
  • Crew members other than  flight crew (IATA Cat 17)
  • Postal Operator staff involved in  processing of mail other than dangerous goods (IATA Postal b)
  • Postal operator  staff involved in handling, storage  and loading of  mail (IATA Postal c)

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

Following this Dangerous Goods Course, the Learner shall be able to:

  • understand the legal aspects involved in the carriage of Dangerous Goods;
  • differentiate between shipper’s, operator’s and employee’s responsibilities;
  • identify the nine classes of dangerous goods by their principle criteria;

Skill

Following this Dangerous Goods Course, the Learner shall be able to:

  • apply the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations correctly;
  • identify dangerous goods which are:
      • forbidden for air transport, or
      • permitted as cargo under the Regulations, or
      • excepted from the Regulations in all or in part;
    • apply the general packing requirements and the specific packing instructions or verify that they have been followed;

    Competence

    Following this Dangerous Goods Course, the Learner shall be able to:

    • verify that the use of a packaging complies with the limitations of the specification indicated on the package;
    • properly mark and label a dangerous goods package or verify the marking or labelling requirements have been met;
    • complete a Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods or verify the information provided on the form complies with the Regulations;
    • properly enter the appropriate information on the Air Waybill or verify that the information was entered properly;
    • recognize and apply the appropriate State and/or Operator Variations;
    • accept or reject a shipment correctly by use of an acceptance checklist;
    • follow general emergency procedures when a damaged/leaking package is discovered.
